Tiger Woods is back. He will be making his return to competitive golf this week at the Quicken Loans National held at Congressional Country Club. Tiger will be joined a field that totals 120 players that have a total of 297 PGA Tour victories. The events main beneficiary is the Tiger Woods Foundation and as such Woods felt obligated to play if healthy. He claims to be 100 percent pain free for the first time in two years but is tempering expectations heading into the event that he has won on two different occasions (2009 and 2012).

“After a lot of therapy, I have recovered well and will be supporting my foundation next week at the Quicken Loans National,” Woods said. “I’ve just started to hit full shots, but it’s time to take the next step. I will be a bit rusty, but I want to play myself back into competitive shape. Excited for the challenge ahead.”

Tiger Woods went under the knife in late March to fix lingering back issues. He underwent microdiscectomy surgery to repair a pinch nerve in his back. While he admits he is rusty and tried to temper expectations he felt like he had to tee it up event though it was not part of the original plan.

“If this wasn’t the foundation and our impact that we can have with kids, I probably would not have played,” Woods said. “Our goal was the British Open.”

But what this means is that Woods will be playing in The Open Championship in July when the event makes its return to Royal Liverpool. Hoylake has been The Open Championship venue once in the last 40+ years, 2006, when Tiger Woods last raised the Claret Jug. Wheile Tiger has missed two golden opportunities to cut into the four major lead held by Jack Nicklaus, The Open Championship venue this year might provide as good a chance as he was going to get. Here’s hoping he does not suffer any setbacks over the next few weeks.
