Rory McIlroy opened the Open Championship with a six-under par 66 on Thursday then slept on the lead. Questions popped up as to whether Rory would implode on Friday. those questions were answered today with a resounding no as McIlroy followed up his opening 66 with a second round six-under 66. That’s right, McIlroy is 12-under through 36 holes at the 2014 Open Championship.
While he is surely not talking about it, McIlroy is chasing history. The Open Championship scoring record (in relation to par) belongs to Tiger Woods. Woods set a mark of 19-under at St. Andrews in 2000 en route to an eight shot victory. Current McIlroy leads Dustin Johnson, who is at eight-under par, by four shots. Enjoy the weekend and watch to see if Rory can take the Open Championship and scoring record. After all, as we have seen in the past, if Rory gets rolling he can go very low.
Tiger Woods, who opened with a solid three-under par round, had a horrible day shooting five-over 77. Woods attempted to play with more aggression in round two leading to a double-bogey on one and a triple-bogey on 17.. Tiger needed a birdie on 18 to make the cut and for a moment he looked like the old emotional Tiger Woods.
Some notables to miss the cut include Lee Westwood, Ernie Els, Bubba Watson and Zach Johnson.
